Can I take strollers and wheelchairs into Disney World?

Getting information on accessibility as well as easy access for parents is extremely important when preparing to visit the most magical place on earth. What does Disney World offer to help?

Disney guests can take personal strollers, wheelchairs and electric conveyance vehicles (ECV) into the parks. There are also 3rd party vendors that offer rentals from Disney directly . You must keep in mind that if you decide to take your own then you need to abide to Disney property rules and guidelines. This is all for safety and of course a better guest experience for everyone.

Check out some additional information below to help you make an informative decision when it comes to strollers and mobility vehicles.

Can I rent Strollers, Wheelchairs or ECV’s at Disney World?

You can rent strollers at any Disney World Park as well as Disney springs and save money by purchasing your entire rental before you arrive. You’re not allowed to take strollers out of a park, but don’t worry it’s not a problem, all you have to do is take your receipt to the rental location at the next park where they will happily provide you with another. If you misplace your stroller just take your receipt to the rental location and they will give you a new one.

Rental prices are as follows:

A Single stroller (recommended for children 50lbs or less) costs $15 per day or if you pre-book and for multiple days it works out at $13 per day.

If you want to take advantage of a double stroller ( recommended for children 100lbs or less) will set you back $31 per day and again pre-booking for multiple days is cheaper, costing $27 per day.

You also need to be aware that a credit card deposit of $100 is required for strollers at Disney Springs.

Wheelchairs and Electric conveyance vehicles have a similar format meaning they can be rented daily or for multiple consecutive days. You can pre-pay for a whole day so you can pick up a new one, if available, each time you enter a park.  As always with direct rentals, they cannot be taking out of their designated parks and only 1 person must ride on them at any one time. Wheelchairs have a maximum weight of 350lbs and ECV’s 450lbs.

Here are the rental prices:

In the Walt Disney World Theme parks, wheelchairs are $12 per day with multiple days being $10 per day. Your ECV’s will set you back $50 per day whether or not you are visiting for more days and you will be required to pay a $20 deposit.

At the Walt Disney World Water Parks and Disney Springs you will pay the same as above but the difference being you will not get any discount for multiple days with the wheelchairs and both will require a $100 deposit.

To benefit from using a rental and having the same advantages of bringing your own, you can rent strollers, wheelchairs and ECV’s from third-party vendor’s before arriving at Disney World. Disney has their own featured provider, ScooterBug, a private mobility rental company based in the central Florida area. Using this company can take away the hassle of having to be present when taking deliveries or returns as the company will work with cast members to ensure a quick and easy process. You can of course rent from your own provider. The choice is endless and what ever makes your experience better is the most important thing.

Are there any mobility vehicles not allowed in Disney World?

As we know from above, if needed, you can take your own strollers, wheelchairs and electric conveyance vehicles into the parks. There are however a number of vehicles and attachments strictly prohibited. You can find details on prohibited items on the Disney World park rules page. But just to make it a little bit easier let’s highlight these vehicles for you here.

First up, Disney World does not allow you to attach any sort of trailer to your stroller, wheelchairs or electric conveyance vehicles. They define it as, “a trailer like object that is pushed, pulled or towed.” Anything that can’t operate on its own without power, if it can’t maintain stability or balance when stopped, if it has three wheels or less, if it comes with training wheels or finally it can’t operate at walking speed then I wouldn’t bother taking it with you as it will not be allowed in Disney. You should also take note that apart from double buggies any mobility vehicle that is permitted should be single rider and cannot exceed 36 inches (92cm) in width and 52 inches (132cm) in length. For those of you that are wondering, wagons are also a big NO NO!

Tips and perks when using Strollers and Mobility Vehicles in Disney World

Ok, sit back, widen your eyes and keep your arms n’ legs inside the sofa. I don’t mean stick them in your sofa that would be just silly.

Mobility Vehicles

Available on a first come first serve basis, if you are going to rent a mobility vehicle from Disney World you should arrive early as you can’t reserve and with a limited amount available you don’t want to be disappointed.

If you’re flying, make sure you book on the Disney magical express rather than taking a taxi or other means. This is for good reason, the magical express buses has lifts for accessibility which makes getting to the parks or your hotel much more stress free. Wheelchairs can be stored with the luggage for easy access at the other side. Cast members will sort it all out for you making this option probably the easiest. If you do decide to take the Disney magical express make sure you check all the accessibility details for both arrival and return trips. This will make your vacation that little bit more seamless.

When you’re at Disney you will find that all on-site transportation is mobility vehicle friendly. This means you can utilize all transport facilities within Disney World and not have problems. Cast members are friendly and helpful so don’t be afraid to ask for some help.

You might also want to check where all the larger “accessible toilet” are in each park. This will save you alot of time and prevent you from having to squeeze till you pop because you can’t get into a bathroom.

Let’s talk about queues as let’s face it you will probably spend your Disney time in a lot of these. For mobility users Disney is great as many locations have separate queues for wheelchair and ECV users. Once in a queue a cast members will happily guide and show you what’s what. So don’t worry if this is your first time.

Maps are also available for wheelchair and ECV users. Only a couple of parks have these that I am aware of (i’ll update if i find anymore information) but it’s worth mentioning and they are great for navigating mobility routes.

Strollers

When at the parks, folding your stroller when using any transportation is good practise. In fact, some locations require it, although, there are some exception’s like with the monorail and ferries. The latter 2 being a good little hack if you don’t want to deal with putting your stroller up-and-down every 5 minutes.

Right, let’s look at where you are not allowed to take strollers. You’re not allowed them in restaurants, queue’s or in theatres. You’ll have to leave them outside in usually a stroller parking area. You’ll know where that is as there will probably be around 2 trillion strollers there already. Okay I’m exaggerating, but there will be a lot! These will probably leave you worrying slightly about your stroller and whether it will be there when you get back. It’s not common for them to be stolen, but it’s also not unheard of. Some people take along a lock for their wheels, however, I feel this is more of a deterrent rather than an actual security method. Thieves usually go for the easy pickings. Try your best to remove all your important belongings, or even better, only carry what you need.

When you return, you may find your stroller is not in the exact same place you left it. Please take this with a pinch of salt as cast members may have had to move it a little to make sure there is space for everyone. To help in this situation making sure your stroller stands out is an absolute hilarious must. Bright pink usually works for me. But we won’t go into my weekends and evenings.

To round up this section, consider getting a stroller fan and a rain cover. Florida is hot when it’s hot and it is very rainy when it’s rainy. Personally, I try to come prepared for anything and always forget something.

Conclusion

We have covered alot in this article. From bringing your own strollers or mobility vehicles, to renting. How much it costs to rent directly from Disney and the flexibility around that, as well as the advantages of 3rd parties or taking your own.

When deciding whats best for your situation you should look at what will make the most sense in terms of cost and reducing stress for you. Keep a particular eye on requirements and rules as cast members will be strict so everyone is safe and happy. But most of all the experience is everything and Disney will assist you in any way they can to help you create memories that you will never forget. Plan ahead properly and you wont go wrong.

As always, I hope you gained some good information here. Have Fun.

See you real soon.
